How the Partnership Between Kansas 811 and One Call Concepts Serves You

It probably goes without saying, but I’ve never let that stop me from saying something

anyway, that almost of the readers that will enjoy this article are familiar with Kansas 811 or

Kansas One-call as it is also known. Kansas 811 got its start back in 1978 as “Kan-U-Dig-It”,

makes me wonder if Don Corenlius was on the board at that time! Later they adopted the

moniker of the Kansas One Call System in the early 1980s. It was only as recently as 2018

that they became known officially as Kansas 811.

Even though this organization has

been around for an incredible

47 years in one iteration or

another there are still a few

misconceptions folks have

about what the role of

Kansas 811 is.

Some believe that Kansas 811

employees such asArch York

and Keely Hosmann will

respond to your tickets and

paint the facilities in conflict.

That’s a negatory good buddy;

you’d have better luck bulldogging the Mississippi and pinning its ears down flat than that

happening! God Bless Chris LeDoux!

Others believe that these same folks field the phone calls for locate requests for the

entire state and process them so others can respond and mark facilities for excavation.

Just for frame of reference the total number of one call requests for the state of Kansas

in 2025 was an astounding 647,896! Needless to say, the fine folks at Kansas 811, of

which there are four, Tom, Arch, Keely and Arch Jr. are not processing those tickets on

their own, they have help.

Before we learn how tickets are processed and what resources are available to you to

generate a locate request lets answer the question…So what is the role of Kansas 811.

Kansas 811 is to provide notification services for excavators, promote damage prevention,

and protect the public welfare. In other words, educate and promote Kansas 811

and the processing of locate requests and help mediate conflicts or discrepancies as

they may arise in the field, while promoting safety and damage prevention.

If Kansas 811 doesn’t help us all with processing locate requests, then who does?

That would actually be a third party named One Call Concepts. One Call Concepts or OCC

as they are commonly referred began their partnership with Kansas 811

way back in 1987 just five years after OCC was founded in 1982 with six employees.

Since that time, they have managed the underground utility damage prevention

notification system for the state of Kansas. That’s more than three decades of dedicated

service in this state alone and they have grown to become the

largest provider of 811 services in North America. In 1993 this partnership was strengthened

further by legislative mandate when the need for a single, comprehensive notification center

was identified. One Call Concepts (OCC) doesn’t just partner with Kansas though they

maintain call centers in 17 states some of which include our neighboring states of

Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri. This is an added benefit for excavators and contractors that

may cross the border from time to time for work. The process, tools, and functionality of

OCC does not differ by state so users of the NXT system or those that still prefer to call

in to the call center will have no trouble

navigating the system in another OCC states.

Before we move on with this article it’s probably import for us to define some terms for

the readers at this juncture……….

What is ITICnxt?

NXT by One Call Concepts is a digital ticketing solution designed for excavators, offering a

seamless user experience and simplified mapping tools. It allows excavators to create,

manage, and track requests entirely online, enhancing the efficiency and safety of excavation

projects. The platform is part of the One Call Concepts’ efforts to improve the workflow and

structure of the excavation industry, making it easier for professionals to handle locate

requests and other related tasks.

What is the Call Center?

One Call Concepts operates the Kansas 811 call center located in Wichita, Kansas.

They provide notification services for underground utility lines, helping prevent damage

during excavation projects.

You can contact the one call center direct at 316-687-2102

Even though One Call Concepts began as strictly a call center for processing tickets with

the advent of new technologies and programs such as NXT web-based ticket management

has become preferential for both the center and the excavators. In 2025 87.13% of the

647,000+ tickets process via the call center, were done via the ITIC system. An overall

percentage they are very proud of and would like to see grow further still.

Here are some commonly asked questions when it comes to Kansas 811 and NXT……

What is the difference between notification area on map and the scope of work?

Lots of users get confused by drawing the area out on the map vs what the actual locators

will by marking. The mapping is strictly a notification area telling us what utilities to

notify. If used correctly or if using the correct tools, the system will help you build the ticket,

but you are still required to verify information on the ticket for accuracy and coverage. The

written portion of the one call ticket is what the locators will be “marking” and what you

are actually covered to dig on.

Am I exempt from needing a ticket?

Some people think they are exempt from calling

for a number of reasons. Maybe they are sure where the lines are or there was

digging done there previously. All digging requires a one call ticket, even in

these cases.

Who gets notified when I put in a ticket?

The one call system is operated by utilities,

therefore, we are notifying the utilities that choose to be members with us.

This does not include any private lines, which would need to be marked

separately.

How long is my ticket good for?

Markings are valid for 20 calendar days in the state of

Kansas. It doesn’t matter if they are still visible or not, they are only valid for 20

calendar days and should be updated if work is continuing.

How long do I need to wait for my ticket to be completed?

It is a 2 full business day notice, required by law, to get markings completed.

NXT and the right tools for the job………

When using the system, it is important to know which tool will work best for your

ticket to be completed accurately. When using the right tool, the system will aide you in

creating the needed information.

Example, if working to remove a tree in the front yard, the radius tool would be perfect to

cover the area needed. If working to replace sidewalk, the route tool would be best to

map out the entire route of work being done. Knowing which tool and how to use it will

help in submitting a correct one call ticket.  If ever unsure, please reach out to our

Kansas 811 team who can provide training or answer any needed questions.

Kansas 811 has set up a system to help ensure that all online users are submitting correct

one call tickets. This system is built just to verify users know how to submit correct

tickets before they are released to submit without review. Each user will go through a

review process. Every new one call ticket that is submitted, will be graded as a “good” or

“bad” ticket. Once the user has reached 40 “good” tickets in a row, the user will be

released out of review. The big thing for being out of review, is the user can submit

emergency one call tickets online, 24/7. While in review, emergency tickets are only

allowed from 8a-5p, M-F.

In 2025 One Call Concepts began touring with and presenting at the Kansas 811

workshops across the state. This was continued in 2026 and the impact these

presentations and training are having is undeniable. I myself have been in the

industry for more than 20 years and I must say this was a large blind spot for me in

the big picture of locate ticket requests and damage prevention. Some of you may

feel the same way, I hope this article helps to shore

some of that up and also encourages you to get out and attend one of the OCC presentations

if you have the opportunity. One Call Concepts will be returning to the Kansas Rural Water

Annual Conference in the Spring of 2027 after a short hiatus to present and train on their

systems.

Be sure and look for that and register as more information becomes available.

If you should ever have any questions or compliments about the One Call ticket

management system, the tools therein or anything regarding One Call Concepts please

don’t hesitate to reach out to the members of their team shown below.

They will be happy to help!
